Tamarindus indica Linn.. A large "evergreen tree. Leaves 3.5-15 cm long, paripinnate. Leaflets 10-21 pairs, opposite, 1.2-1.8 cm long, oblong, obtuse. Inflorescence 10-15 flowered lax raceme. Petals 3, pale yellow with red veins5571. Fruit pendulous legume, 5-(j inches long, linear-oblong, slightly compressed, curved or nearly straight. Outer shell or epicarp thin and hard, brittle and of a cinnamon colour, containing with in the shell the acid and juicy pu\p oi a tJafk, ^ed or brownish dark colour. Seeds 10 or 12, enclosed in a tough membranous cell, flattened, of an irregular outline obtusely furrowed, roundish or obovate and exalbuminous.
